A consistent album containing seemingly short but memorable metal tracks from start to finish. I definitely have a favourite section to this album covering the 5 songs from The Forgotten to Take Me Away , but it’s difficult to pick a best track although A Light in a Darkened World interchanging between ballad and heavy drums sticks out the most to me. Overall the album has a good ‘Killswitch’ mix of melody and metal. It’s got three live tracks to boost the album including a great version of Rose of Sharyn. Best songs: The Forgotten, The Reckoning, The Return, A Light in a Darkened World. My score 8/10

Despite sounding ‘typically’ Marilyn Manson and containing some brave lyrics this album failed to impress me. The majority of the tracks are not up to scratch and a bomb track is lacking. My favourite song would have to be the single Arma-god-damn-motherf*****-geddon, it’s lively, loud and most importantly has an awesome name! I think We’re From America could have been a great song if the chorus’s weren’t so annoying. If I was feeling anti-American I think I’d much rather hear American Idiot by Green Day or Know your Enemy, not by Green Day. Running to the Edge of the World is the good slow song from the album but that type of song is generally not why I’m listening to Marilyn Manson. There is only a few bands I would rather see than Marilyn Manson live, but only if he promised not to play too much from this album Best songs: Arma-god-damn-motherf*****-geddon, Pretty as a Swastika , Black and White, Running to the Edge of the World. To get to the point this is my second favourite Placebo album after their amazing debut. It has great beats, memorable lyrics and there isn’t a song I don’t like. Until Battle for the Sun I felt that each of Placebo’s previous album had deteriorated since it’s predecessor however the diversity of the songs and the more upbeat nature make this album very satisfying. The album covers a variety of emotions and feelings with Bright Lights being a well placed mid-album track with a jubilant introduction preceding meaningful lines that include ‘a heart that hurts, is a heart that works’ The title track is certainly growing on me in a similar way that Pure Morning did using sneaky repetitiveness to ensure you can’t help but know all the lyrics. Best songs: Never Ending Why, For What it’s Worth, Breathe Underwater, Bright Lights My Score 9/10 |
